Lots and Character Types

“I was a pirate king, now I'm a nurse. That's funny.”

Dialogue by Marc Norman & Tom Stoppard, Shakespeare in Love (1998)

In Berwick, identities are fluid and destinies shift like the North Sea tides. Your character comes with its own unique modifiers, but these are never set in stone. Through the choices you make during the event, you may change lots, alter your character type, or find your abilities fundamentally transformed.

Game Mechanics: Character Fluidity & Lots

Character Progression: Your character type and abilities are highly dynamic. Powers can be limited, removed, or gained based on your ongoing roleplay, your employment, or your ownership of Objects of Power.

The Arc: Progression has no limits. A player can transition from a completely mundane, clueless mortal to an immortal entity by the end of the event, or fall from grace entirely.

Mid-Game Transitions: You are expected and encouraged to change your lot or types if the story dictates it. Several character's story arcs are specifically about making these changes.

Growing and Losing Power

You said identities were fluid. How do I grow and lose power?

  1. Objects of Power: The easiest answer is through obtaining or losing objects of power. If an item is bought, sold, bartered, or stolen you instantly gain or lose the specialized abilities bound to that item.

  2. Aspect Rewrites: The second most common path is after a major story element occurs. Your NPC Facilitator or the Ops Team will simply rewrite your core Aspect to match your character's new reality. One single word in an Aspect's sentence can dynamically change your universal tier costs and story permissions. Because we cannot anticipate every genius choice you will make on the floor, an on-the-fly Aspect change is our primary tool to validate your creativity.

  3. Toolkit Overhauls: The most complex transitions involve completely rewriting your ability toolkit. Please note that these overhauls are infrequent, are absolutely not processed as an on-the-fly item, and not all characters feature or will experience them. Where they do exist, these high-tier shifts have been pre-written before the event starts as part of a character's anticipated arc, or utilize a pre-printed standard package addition. These rare overhauls will be explicitly delivered by an NPC Facilitator, processed behind the scenes at Game Ops, or triggered privately via a sealed envelope delivery.

The Lots of Berwick

Why We Use "Lots" Instead of Factions

In traditional LARPs, players are typically divided into factions unified by a shared political goal or creed.

In The Life of the Party, your character belongs instead to a Lot, defined simply by how you arrived at the tavern tonight and your starting purpose in the narrative. While some Lots share a unified goal, others are collections of independent souls thrown together by happenstance. Your Lot represents your starting slice of destiny. As the night unfolds the cup may be reshaken through your choices.

  • The Silent Court: The restless, ghostly court of the dead. They have arrived in temporary physical vessels.

  • The Invited: Those who have been explicitly welcomed to the celebration, they are the planned candidates.

  • The Party Crashers: Uninvited independents and small, rogue groups crashing the gates who serve to balance out the pristine invited candidates to create a perfect equilibrium.

  • The Tavern Staff: The caretakers of the Siren's Wail and the friends they keep close. Their overarching question is simple: can they keep this independent kingdom they built together standing until the end?

  • The Weaver's Vanguard: Those drawn to this frontier port by the invisible strings of fate itself. A group of specialized experts brought together to ensure destiny's designs are seen fulfilled.

The Stewards of the Lot: Leads, XOs and NPC Facilitators.

To guide the narrative flow and keep the game running smoothly on a 100-player floor, each Lot is anchored by a formal leadership structure designed to distribute operational burdens and build future leadership tracks within our community:

  • The Lead: Your group's narrative anchor. They hold the deepest secrets and align the group's momentum with the plot team.

  • The XO: The operational coordinator and second-in-command. This track is explicitly designed as a mentorship pipeline for up-and-coming players to learn large-scale game management under an experienced Lead. Reach out to them for real-time coordination on the floor.

  • The NPC Facilitators: Staff members embedded directly into the game world who manage complex rules, distribute physical game props, or act as an out-of-character safety resource.

They are your Lot's in-character caretaker explicitly stationed on the floor to assist you. You may not always get what you ask for, they are independent thinkers who will give you what they think you need. If your character's story stalls or a local scene locks into a tight stalemate, locate an NPC Facilitator. They hold the explicit authority to drop a sudden, chaotic rumor, activate a sleeping plot trigger, or deliver a nudge to get your gears turning again.

The Inhabitants of Berwick

  • The Immortals: are a god in all but name, a living pillar of the cosmos and the physical embodiment of a grand concept or domain. Playing an Immortal means stepping into a fascinating paradox: you wield world-bending magic, yet you are driven by raw desires, petty rivalries, and the complex politics of a highly dysfunctional divine family. Your existence is a beautiful tragedy; while you are eternal, you are not invulnerable, and dangerous elements can warp your power and threaten your life. Furthermore, eons of power and mortal belief create a powerful "Feedback Loop" that slowly grinds away your original personality, threatening to turn you into a rigid caricature of your title. As an Immortal, your game will be defined by engaging in high-stakes intrigue and desperately fighting to hold onto the fleeting, ghost-like memories of the mortal person you used to be.

  • The Ghosts: are a spirit bound to the unseen realms, normally invisible and unheard by the living. However, for tonight’s event, you have been granted a rare and fragile gift: a temporary physical body. Playing a Ghost means experiencing the world with raw intensity, knowing that while you cannot easily "die" again, any physical wounds you take will inflict excruciating pain and must be treated before your time runs out. Your experience will be defined by the dramatic tension between the ethereal world of spirits and the heavy, dangerous world of the living. As a Ghost, your game will focus on navigating the vulnerability of your physical form, and deciding whether to fight for a permanent place among the living or finally step through the mysterious Gate.

  • The Humans: are residents (Berwickers) or travelers in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Humans are the most diverse and unpredictable group in the game, bringing together local residents and international travelers. This group spans from completely mundane merchants and soldiers who care only about local commerce and changing crowns, to secret mystics who practice forbidden rites in the dark. Playing a Human means embodying fierce pride and quiet resilience, stepping into the shoes of a practical survivor Your experience will be defined by navigating a treacherous, international religious cold war, leveraging your unique cultural background, and proving that mortal grit, and worldly wits can hold their own when face with world and problems they never knew existed for the first time.

  • The Creatures of Legend: Ancient beings of myth walk among us, hiding in plain sight. Stripping away modern tabletop tropes, this game resurrects the superstitions of 1567. Here, an elf is no whimsically pointed caricature, but an Aos Sí: a haunting, otherworldly entity born of ancient mounds and hollow hills, all carefully adapted to serve this dark tale. Playing a Creature of Legend means entering a tense masquerade. To survive, you are desperately mimicking humanity. Your experience is a high-stakes balancing act: mirror human customs, navigate the religious cold war, and maintain a mortal disguise.

  • The Demiurges: Little is known of the Demiurges save for the whispers left behind in their wake. They are an elusive, ancient collective. Throughout the eons, they have appeared fleetingly to perform a job only to vanish into the shadows once their work is done. They are the keepers of secrets. Normally, a Demiurge walks alone, yet tonight, their separate tracks have suddenly and inexplicably collided within the walls of The Siren's Wail. Their presence is a silent warning to all who notice them that a crack has formed in the very foundation of the grand design.
